Elise Sampaio
Artist’s Statement
As a photographer, my work is rooted in the quiet moments that often go unnoticed—the interplay of light and shadow, the subtle shift of a landscape, the fleeting expressions that reveal inner worlds. I am drawn to the beauty of simplicity, where the absence of noise allows space for contemplation and emotional resonance. Through my lens, I seek to capture more than just an image; I aim to evoke a feeling, a connection to the transient nature of time and place.
In both my personal and commissioned work, I explore themes of identity, memory, and the delicate balance between presence and absence. Whether I’m photographing vast natural landscapes or intimate portraits, I strive to find the universal within the specific. Photography, for me, is a way to tell stories without words, to create visual poetry that invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and find meaning in the stillness.Biography

Influences
Elise Sampaio’s photography is deeply influenced by a combination of minimalism, naturalism, and the work of both classical and contemporary artists. She draws inspiration from the quiet, introspective approach of photographers like Michael Kenna and Rinko Kawauchi, whose use of light and subtlety informs her own aesthetic. Nature plays a significant role in shaping her visual language, from the shifting Brazilian landscapes of her childhood to the urban environments she now inhabits. Elise is also influenced by modern architecture, particularly its emphasis on clean lines and open spaces, which she mirrors in her compositions. Additionally, she finds inspiration in Japanese aesthetics, specifically the concept of "wabi-sabi," embracing imperfection and the beauty of transience in her work.
